United Heathcare Singled Out for Violations of Texas Insurance Law

The cover story for the February 2008 Texas Medicine , the monthly journal published by the Texas Medical Association, identifies United Healthcare as the only insurance company in Texas to be fined for repeated violations of Texas state insurance "Prompt Payment Law". Not only is United the only insurance company to be fined for violations of Texas's prompt pay laws, but it has been fined repeatedly for these violations. As recently as November of 2007, United was fined 4.4 million for complaint log violations.

We feel it is important that our patients be fully informed when they make insurance decisions. Although these decisions are sometimes made for our patients by their employer, often our patients have choices about what insurance company they use.

Insurance companies often do not deal with providers in a fair manner. Insurance companies that have a reputation for not dealing fairly with providers are likely to see the best providers leaving their networks. When providers make decisions to not participate in certain insurance networks, it is never a decision made lightly but one they feel they are forced to make.
